When I went back to University to study Humanistic Psychotherapeutic Counselling - I was supported through a process that helped me realise in a more detailed way how my brain functioned. The western world calls it Dyslexia - I like to call it - awesome spacial and visual awareness - with a small side effect that I get tired reading long sentences, need a colour overlay, struggle with spelling (as phonetically the English language is bizarre) so prefer visual learning and spoken interaction with people.
My whole life I had inadvertently found coping strategies and unfortunately as a result it wasn’t picked up earlier in my life.
When I had discovered this superpower - I realised there were many more people out there with similar abilities who I could learn from and get tips and techniques as to how to function in this statically average/neurotypical world we live in :)
One such technique I was shown was Tony Buzan - Mind Mapping
THIS REVOLUTIONISED MY WORLD!
I started out with a few pens and now have a full set of pens, pencils, eraser, highlighter, markers and more
I have honed my techniques over the past few years and have had many comments on them as I have used them openly in meetings and training sessions.
Below are a few of my most recent training mind maps as a counsellor - the topics may be sensitive - so please look after yourself and check in with yourself as you read/study them. I am leaving them here in a hope to inspire others and show what I have managed to create. My first ones were much simpler. I also realised that drawing along side the notes helps my mind lock them in place and I can recall things more easily from the training. It may not work that way for you - so I encourage you to try it and see what works for you :)
Here’s to all of us and our neurodiversity :)
